Communa 13, Medellin

We went on a walking tour of Communa 13 which is famous for having been taken over by warring drug gangs and vigilantes and then regained, with some controversy, by the city government, aided by the military.

Today it is a successful community with a vibrant street life and art. It is worth reading the book written by a police sergeant that describes the events form the perspective of the authorities and the community response units. This provides a balance to the understandably one sided view presented by the street walk leader.
